It’s important to stay hydrated. Every time you exhale you lose a little water, even when you’re sitting still or sound asleep. You lose even more when you move and sweat a little, or work out and sweat a lot.

You have to replace that water. And the two choices you have are either from a cheap plastic bottle or a tap. Neither of which are guaranteed to be clean, and probably aren’t.

Municipal tap water from a water treatment facility has chlorine or chloramine along with a variety of other chemicals added to the water to deal with whatever might be in it before they get it or picked up in the pipes on its way to you.

You would think bottled water would be better, but it isn’t. Most of it comes from a tap, so it’s really the same stuff. Purified bottled water is filtered by reverse osmosis and is very clean and pH neutral when it goes into the bottle, but it isn’t when it comes out. The nearly pure water absorbs chemicals from the cheap plastic bottle and becomes acidic by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air when you twist off the cap for the first time. And bottled water is expensive.

A good water filter like the PiMag Waterfall is a better solution. Your inexpensive tap water goes in the top and clean, refreshing water comes out the bottom. It filters out the chlorination chemicals from tap water and doesn’t add chemicals and plastic like a bottle does.

What is the PiMag Waterfall

The PiMag Waterfall from Nikken is a gravity water filtration system. You pour cold tap water in the supply tank at the top. Gravity pulls the water down through the filter, which uses a variety of filtration materials to clean your water. Then your water collects in the storage tank at the bottom until you need it. Your water slowly soaks up minerals from the rocks in the bottom tank while it sits.

I have a PiMag Waterfall myself and all of the water that we drink, cook with, water plants with, and give to our pets goes through it. It’s easy to use and maintain. The biggest challenge is getting people (kids) to put more water in when they take some out. Fortunately it filters pretty fast, so you won’t have to wait long if you find that someone else emptied it on you.

Unlike some systems out there it doesn’t need to be plugged in to electricity or connected directly to a water supply. That makes it somewhat portable. You normally want to have to somewhat near the sink so you don’t have to carry water very far, but you can move it if you’re having a party or something and want it convenient for people. I have also traveled with mine and had it in a hotel room if I’m going to be there for more than a few days. It’s also perfect for RVs and the questionable water sources at campgrounds.

How to Use and Maintain Your PiMag Waterfall

Using the PiMag Waterfall is easy. You pour tap water in the top and remove water from the spigot at the bottom. Only use cold water. Hot water will ruin your filter cartridge. Also, be careful not to overfill it. There aren’t any seals between the top and bottom tanks, so if you pour more water into the top than will fit in the bottom tank you will find your Waterfall sitting in a puddle of water after a little bit. Everybody does it at least once.

The manual for the Waterfall recommends that you change the filter cartridge every 3 months and the mineral stones every 12 months. You have to decide what is right for you and your situation. For example, my water comes from a well and I replace the filter cartridge in my Waterfall every 9 months. I stick to the 12 month schedule for the stones.

You can save 10% on your filter cartridge and stones if you set up an autoship order. If you follow the recommended schedule, you could have an autoship order that ships you a filter cartridge every 3 months. Once a year you add your stones to the order then remove them after the order ships.

Maintenance

It is important to prepare a new filter cartridge before you install it for the first time.

Take the top off of the cartridge by giving it a little twist then lifting it. You can see the little hooks at each end that hold it on. Then remove the sponges. There is a large one on top then for smaller ones under it.

Stand the cartridge up in a pitcher and fill it with water up even with the top of the filtration material in the cartridge. The water will seep into the bottom of the cartridge and push any air in the cartridge out the top. Drop the sponges into the water beside the cartridge and let them soak. It is best to let it all soak over night.

Rinse the rocks off in cold water to remove any dust that formed during shipping then set them aside to dry.

In the morning you can remove the cartridge from the water, insert the smaller sponges into their slots, slide the bigger sponge down on top, then put the lid back on. The lid clicks back into place with a little twist. Again, you can see the hooks at the ends of the oval.

Now you can reassemble your Waterfall. First the rocks go in the bottom tank. I place them all up on the ledge, but I don’t think you have to. Just don’t let any fall into the round well where the bottom of the cartridge will sit.

Next, firmly push the filter cartridge into the hole in the top tank until it is all the way in. It fits snuggly so that water cannot bypass the filter cartridge. Then put it on top of the lower tank. There is a plate between the top and bottom tanks that I often forget about because it sometimes sticks to the bottom of the top tank.

Now fill it up with water and put the lid on. You’re all set until the next time you have to replace the filter cartridge.

What elements are reduced or eliminated with the original pimag and the new waterfall..?

    • Wayne says:

Hi Yvonne. By “original pimag” I assume that you mean the Aqua Pour. It pretty much only removed chlorine and the other chemicals associated with chlorination. Some cities switched from chlorine to chloramine, which the Aqua Pour did not remove well. That was one of the motivations to develop the Waterfall. The Waterfall has been tested to meet or exceed ANSI/NSF Standard 42 (particulates, chlorine, chloramine, odor and taste) and ANSI/NSF Standard 53 for cysts and lead.

I have a PiMag water fall and like the taste of the water
Only thing that could make this PiMag better would be an auto water fill system to
    keep the water reservoir filled

  3. Barb says:

I have well water and would like to know if the waterfall is a suitable filtration system?
Also, I would like additional information on the mineral rocks.

    • Wayne says:

Hi Barb. I have well water too and use the Waterfall to filter it for drinking and cooking. The mineral rocks are manufactured rocks with just a trace amount of minerals to help the filtered water stay alkaline while sitting in the bottom tank.

  4. Carmalene says:

Hello, I have an ro system and are wondering if I could use the the Pimag to remineralize the water out of our system? Or if you have any other products that would remineralize our water that first goes through an whole house charcoal filter and then RO in the kitchen.

  5. Serge says:

I need full specs for this water system and what is the difference between the US/canada system and similar system sold in Colombia for instance? Also, I need pimag optimizer, why here it is not available?

    • Hi Serge. The biggest difference between the new Nikken PiMag Waterfall and the discontinued Aqua Pour is in the quality of the water filtration. The PiMag Waterfall cleans the water much more thoroughly and adjusts the alkalinity to between 8.5 and 9.5 pH. The Aqua Pour couldn’t come close to that. The Waterfall is also smaller so that more people can make room for it on their counter tops. You can find the full specs right here in the manual.
The Optimizer II was discontinued 2 years ago so your best chance for finding one now would be on Craigslist or Ebay.

      • Serge says:

Thanks Wayne, if it is discontinued, where to to get spare parts? Also, why in many countries still sale it (both systems)? Also, can you advise about your Calgary rep I wanna get this new system. Thanks

        • Serge, the replacement filter components for the Aqua Pour are still available here and should continue to be available for at least another 4 years.
The PiMag Waterfall was first introduced in the US then as demand levels out and any government approvals are obtained it was expanded to other countries. Remaining stock of old products, like the Aqua Pour, continue to be available until they are sold out. The Aqua Pour was still available for the first 2 months or so that the Waterfall was available. Discontinued products tend to sell out faster in the US and Canada than other countries because they are so much larger than other countries. In the case of the Aqua Pour here, Nikken reduced the price by $100 or so and they sold fast.
I don’t currently have any teammates in Calgary. Even if I did it would still ship to you directly from Nikken, so the easiest thing to do is order it online by clicking the picture above on this page. All products in the US ship from Nikken HQ in Irvine, CA. Everything in Canada ships from their warehouse in Mississauga, ON.

  6. Juan says:

What happened with the pimag water system? I can see it in Australia, Latin America but not in the US.

    • Hi Juan. The Nikken gravity water system that you have in Latin America is what we called the PiMag Aqua Pour. That was discontinued for the US and Canada last Fall and replaced with the PiMag Waterfall that you see on this page. The Aqua Pour replacement filters are still available and should be for 4 more years or so.
