I’ve heard it called one of Nature’s perfect foods. People have also told me that you can live on barley grass powder and water. That may be true, but I wouldn’t want to. It would get boring pretty quick. It tastes like grass. Some people have said it tastes like green tea, or even peas.
Nikken identifies Jade GreenZymes as a gastrointestinal supplement that aids in the removal of waste and helps maintain healthy bones and tissues. It is naturally alkaline, so it helps to regulate your body’s internal pH when so much of what we consume is acidic. I take Jade GreenZymes myself, but more often in the spring and fall. I find that it helps me feel better when I have to be outside in those seasons. I really don’t know why. My guess is that it has something to do with the chlorophyll content.
I also find that sometimes it seems to give me a little bit of an energy boost, kind of like a small caffeine kick but much more subtle. I don’t drink caffeinated beverages, so if you do you might not notice this yourself.
What is Jade GreenZymes
Jade GreenZymes is a nutritional supplement made mostly from young barley grass. It is cold-pressed and minimally refined into a light, green powder. It also contains organic maltodextrin from tapioca to prevent the powder from clumping during transit. Nikken currently offers it as a loose powder in a box of single-serving packets or in capsules that can be swallowed directly.
It is certified organic, non-GMO, kosher, gluten-free, and vegan, so most people should be able to take it.
I prefer the packets myself because I find benefit in going through the process of preparing it. But if you don’t have the time or means to mix it up first, or don’t care for the flavor, then the capsules are for you.
How to Use Jade GreenZymes
If you choose the capsules, then you take it just like any other supplement capsule. A serving is four capsules and wash them down with as much water as you need.
The single-serving tubes take a little more preparation. Pour the tube of powder into a glass with 4 to 6 ounces of cold to room-temperature water. Do not use hot water because that will destroy most of the nutrients. Stir the powder into the water and drink. A little of the powder will sometimes stick to the side of the glass. If that happens, add a little water and to rinse it off and drink it. It is a good idea to rinse out the glass afterward, or leave it soaking, because the dried powder residue can take a little more effort to wash off.

Jade GreenZymes contains organic young barley grass juice extract powder, organic maltodextrin, organic acacia fiber, and organic pearl barley seed extract powder. If you get the capsules, it is a 100% vegetarian capsule and magnesium stearate.
I found multiple boxes of jade greenzymes in my closet but have no idea of expiration date or where to find it? I’d guess I bought them around 2003. Just tasted a packet, seemed ok. These are nicely packaged individual foil sticks…
Hi Lu. I would think the expiration date would be stamped on the bottom of the box but I can’t be sure. Regardless, I’m sure they are well beyond their expiration dates if you bought them in 2003. My current jar of Jade GreenZymes, which is the same thing you have in the tubes, looks like it was packaged in 2017 and expires in 2020, so it’s shelf life is about 3 years. Based on that, your supply should be at least 12 years out of date.
Can you guarantee that the product is 100% gluten free? Does it contain barkey seeds?

Hi Nina. It is gluten free. It is young green barley grass powder, so it is harvested before it has gone to seed.
