I have a friend with fibromyalgia and she says that she doesn’t have any symptoms as long as she sleeps on her magnetic mattress pad. In fact, whenever she travels she takes her magnetic sleep system her.

I was curious if there had been any clinical studies done to show statistical benefits for fibromyalgia sufferers from a magnetic mattress pad. I found this one – Magnetic mattress pad use in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomized double-blind pilot study. It showed that sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad provided “statistically significant and clinically relevant pain relief and sleep improvement” for fibromyalgia sufferers. Apart from the results themselves, I found it interesting that they used a magnetic mattress pad that provided only 200 to 600 Gauss at the skin surface to get these results.

It would be interesting to find out if the participants in the study benefited directly from the magnets themselves or if the improvement in their fibromyalgia symptoms was do more to the better quality sleep that the magnetic mattress pad offered. Either way, relief is relief.

I was asked a few days ago how to deal with sciatic pain. Before talking about how to deal with it, I think it is important to know what sciatic pain is and what can cause it.

The sciatic nerve comes out of the lower spine and as you can see in this picture, it passes through the pelvis beneath the piriformus muscle. Sciatic pain is caused when the sciatic nerve gets pinched, usually by inflammation or adhesions in the piriformus muscle.

The person who asked me about sciatic pain said her pain usually comes when he has been running hard, so her discomfort is probably caused by a tight piriformus muscle and can probably be handled with better stretching before and after her run. I found a great video of how to properly stretch out the piriformus on YouTube.

I believe that this stretch will also greatly benefit people who have chronic sciatic pain. If this is you, please keep in mind that your discomfort wasn’t created in just one day, so it will probably take more than five or ten minutes of stretching to get rid of it.

If I was having to deal with this sciatic pain on a continuing basis then I would have to find something else to help me get through. For me, that would be a weekly massage to work on the piriformus and some magnets to get me through the days in between. Probably the easiest form of magnet to use would be a magnetic chair pad for when you are sitting and a magnetic mattress pad for when you are laying down.

I stumbled upon this clinical study a while back that shows how a magnetic pillow, magnetic bracelet, and magnetic insoles can help improve quality of sleep for people who suffer from insomnia. The study showed that by using a magnetic pillow, people who had trouble either getting to sleep in first place, or staying asleep for very long, could get benefit from using a magnetic pillow, and possibly even better results if they also used magnetic insoles and / or a magnetic bracelet.

It is important to note that this study was a preliminary with a small number of people and no placebo control. I am sure that any follow-up studies will address these criteria.

This study is also dated to some degree because it uses the previous versions of the Nikken pillow and TriPhase bracelet. I would be very curious to see how much better the results would be if they used the current Naturest pillow with its more powerful magnets. And if they could get these results with just a pillow, insoles, and bracelet, just think what kind of results they could get with the mattress pad, or better yet, the whole magnetic sleep system.

I admit that I didn’t have any sleep issues before I started my adventure with Nikken. With my sleep system (which is a magnetic mattress pad, comforter, and pillow) I am almost asleep before my head touches the pillow. Even on nights when I have difficulty getting to sleep it is only a few minutes.

Just over a week ago I wrote a post about cellphones, wi-fi, and EMF radiation. Please take a moment to read it as this post is an update to that one. I was motivated enough by what I read while getting information about wireless radiation to make some improvements in our environment for me and my family. I wanted to turn off our wireless network and use an air-tube headset for our cellphones.

First was to turn off the wireless part of our network router, but I immediately encountered an obstacle. We use our Wii to stream Netflix to our TV and the Wii does not directly support a wired network. We found a LAN adapter for the Wii on Amazon and it arrived yesterday. It was incredibly easy to install and change the Wii over to our wired network. With the last obstacle finally out of the way I disabled the wireless part of our network.

I immediately felt a change when I turned it off. I didn’t think that I was all that sensitive to the EMF noise but I am apparently sensitive enough to have noticed the change. What I really enjoyed was that my kids got along great for the rest of the day. No fussing and fighting. They even went to bed easy last night with none of the usual fooling around. That was worth the work right there. Today has been a great day for them so far too.

The second part was to get air-tube headsets for our cellphones. I had read plenty of bad reviews on Amazon that the sound quality with some of the air tubes was really bad. Well, they arrived today and I immediately had to try it out with my phone. I plugged them in and inserted the ear-buds into my ears. The fit snuggly and comfortably unlike a lot I had tried before. So far, so good. Then I called my father to see how an actual call would work. He said that he was able to hear me more clearly than he could with my old wire, and I could hear him very well too. My wife wanted to try hers out while she was driving to the spa to do a massage, so she called me from her car. Even with her windows open we could hear each other clearly and easily. Not very much of the wind noise came through at all. These things work great.

So, while wireless EMF is all around us, it is possible to reduce some of what we are exposed to at least while we are in our own homes.

In the other post I mentioned that a magnetic chair pad and a magnetic mattress pad can also help to deal with the effects of exposure to bad EMFs.

I was looking through the search phrases that people have used in the past month to get to my website and found this one: “are nikken magnetic mattress safe for toddlers”. I think that is a really good question because we want to keep our kids safe and give them the best quality sleep that we can.

The short answer is yes, they are safe to use for toddlers.

When we got involved in Nikken our daughter was 2 years old and our son was 6 months and starting to cut his first teeth. When our daughter was going through that she was sometimes up twice during the night and probably 3 nights a week. It was miserable. So we immediately got our son on a magnetic pad. It was actually the Nikken Magnetic Pet Pad which just happens to be the perfect size to fit in a crib. It think he woke up during the night twice the entire time he was cutting his teeth. We were sold on magnetic pads right there and that remains to this day my most telling story about the benefits of magnetic pads.

Now our kids are 7 years old and 5 years old and sleep every night on a complete magnetic sleep system, which consists of a magnetic mattress pad, magnetic and far-infrared comforter, and a magnetic pillow. They sleep great and wake up rested and usually in a good mood in the morning.

Why I Believe Nikken Magnetic Sleep Systems are Safe

For one, I have met some of the people behind the Nikken products and I know people who know them pretty well. These are people with families and children and only want the best for them, which is part of the reason that they are with Nikken. I have also heard Anthony Bove, the person who developed many of Nikken’s magnetic products, speak about the magnets and his beliefs about how strong the magnets should be based on time-tested electromagnetic science. Nikken’s magnets are not exactly the strongest magnets on the market.

Nikken’s older magnetic mattress pads had magnets that were about 800 gauss compared to other companies that make magnetic pads rated at up to 10,000 gauss. Anthony Bove determined that 800 gauss was the right amount of magnetic energy to support the body and not over-stimulate it. The newer Naturest pads and pillow use 3200 gauss magnets and decided that the increased magnetic strength was needed because they sit deeper into the pad. The magnetic strength at the surface of the pad is about 800 gauss, the same as for the older pads.

The thing to keep in mind about Nikken’s products is that they are not intended to cure diseases. They are intended to support the body so that it can function at its best. Basically, all of Nikken’s products and technologies are designed to take the natural energies that our ancestors experienced in our natural habitat, the great outdoors, and bring them inside where we spend too much of our time.

So again, yes, the Nikken magnetic mattress pads are safe for babies, toddler, kids, adults, and the elderly. My kids sleep on a magnetic sleep system and so do my wife and I. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m a big fan of the Nikken Sleep System. Sure, you can find a lot of people who will tell you about how it helped their back pain, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, or any of a number of other problems. I can’t really talk much about specific conditions and whether the magnetic sleep system will help with them or not because I’m not a doctor and it would be illegal for me to do so. What I can tell you about is how well I sleep on it.

I have had my sleep system for almost 5 years now and it has been amazing. My family is fortunate to not have any kind of sleep condition but we are normal people and did used to have trouble sleep some nights. And I do mean “used to” have problems, as in I don’t anymore. I can’t think of a single night in the past 5 years that I have had trouble getting to sleep or sleeping through the night, unless I was sick (which is also very rare thanks, I believe, to Nikken).

In my family we all sleep on a Nikken sleep system. We go to bed at night, sleep through the night, and wake up rested in the morning. As you know, you don’t always get to sleep in as late as you would like. My cat gets me up early to be fed and to go outside then I have to get my daughter up and my wife gets up to get her ready for school. My son is the only one who gets to sleep in during the week. While we do have to get up earlier than we would like, we are still rested and ready for the day because the magnets pull us down into a deep, rejuvenating sleep.

People often ask me if they can return a Nikken product if it “doesn’t work” after a period of time. Nikken’s return policy only covers the manufacture of the product, not its effectiveness for a particular condition, and there is a very good reason for that.

For Nikken to warranty anything other than the materials and craftsmanship of their products then that would be taken as a medical claim by the FDA, which would put Nikken, and all of us distributors, out of business very quick.

For example, take Nikken’s new Naturest magnetic mattress pads. They are the most expensive items that Nikken offers and I can understand someone wanting some assurance that they have made a good investment when they purchase one. Nikken’s documented warranty on a magnetic mattress pad says that they will replace it if it falls apart within a year of you buying it. Nikken cannot guarantee that the pad will “do” anything other than lay flat on your bed and provide you a surface to sleep on, and I’m telling you that it does provide a very nice surface to sleep on.

What else can Nikken say that it does without making a medical claim? A lady called me today asking about the Naturest pad and wanted to know if it would help her with her peripheral neuropathy. I’d love to tell her that it does, but that would be a medical claim, so I cannot. Same thing goes for her daughter’s migraine headaches.

Because the magnetic mattress pads are so expensive, I recommend that people start with less expensive magnetic products, like the Magsteps insoles, so that they can see how they will respond to the Nikken magnets before they make a big investment.

Even if there are documented studies that say that something works, Nikken still cannot make the claim without getting in trouble.

A week ago today Nikken launched an updated version of their Ciaga juice, Ciaga^V. It contains some very potent fruits: acai berry, maqui berry, elderberry, blackberry, grape seed extract, raspberry, and agave nectar. Last night Nikken hosted a teleconference to educate the distributors on the product and Dave Balzer strongly emphasized the asterisk on the label and what it meant.

You’ve probably seen the same disclaimer statement on other products: “*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Federal law requires this statement to be on all dietary supplements and Nikken uses the statement a lot.

On the call last night, they said that the law restricts them from making statements that are even backed up by documented scientific studies. For example, they mentioned documented studies found on Pub Med that state that antioxidants found in blackberries have been found to be effective in curing and preventing cancer. Because Ciaga^V is a food-based dietary supplement, Nikken cannot use that study to say anything that would claim that Ciaga^V has any affect on cancer, or any other disease for that matter.

By the way, I found one study about blackberries and cancer here on PubMed.

So, please understand the reasons behind Nikken’s limited product warranties and their very conservative claims for what their products will do. If you hear any other distributors making wild claims about the products, please remind them that they are not doctors.

Dr. William C. Dement, considered by some to be the father of sleep science, said that “Healthy sleep has been empirically proven to be the single most important determinant in predicting longevity, more important than diet, exercise, or heredity”.

Put more succinctly, sleep is more important than anything else to have a long life.

Sleep is important for many reasons. It provides a chance for the body to release stress, repair the normal wear and tear of the body, and do all of the other things that the body does when it relaxes. Basically, sleep is the time when the parasympathetic nervous system can take over. Heart rate slows, food gets digested, damaged cells get repaired or replaced, our immune system takes care of bacteria and viruses to keep us healthy.

During the day, when we are awake and active, we can be under a lot of stress. Stress raises the sympathetic nervous system, the one that controls the flight-or-fight response that we hear so much about. It also suppresses the parasympathetic system, so our immune response is slow, we don’t digest well, and our systems become acidic. If we stay in this mode for long, our systems become toxic.

We fix this when we sleep. By not getting enough sleep, we run the risk of not undoing all of the damage done by the day’s stress.
