In addition to watching the leaves change color, picking apples, and carving pumpkins, Fall means new products from Nikken. In part 1 of this post I told you about the items that Nikken discontinued to make room for the new ones. Many of those older items are still available, so check them out while you can.

Now we are going to take a look at the new Nikken products.

The one that has me, and most of the other people I have talked to, the most excited is the PiMag Waterfall that will replace the discontinued Aqua Pour. It does everything that the Aqua Pour did and does some things better. The Waterfall makes use of the new filtration technology that was developed for, and first released in, the PiMag sport water bottle that Nikken gave us back in July.

It is said to adjust the water to somewhere between 8.5 and 9.5 pH so that it is nicely alkaline. The filter also lowers the redox potential, a capability that used to be reserved for much more expensive systems. What that means for you and me is that the water, in addition to everything else it does in the body, will act less like a free radical and more like an antioxidant.

The waterfall is a little smaller than the Aqua Pour was. The new fill tank is 5 liters, a liter smaller, and the supply tank is 7 liters instead of the 10 liters that the Aqua Pour held. What you gain from this smaller size is that it takes up less counter space and should fit under your kitchen cabinets.

The only thing that I have seen about the PiMag Waterfall that I don’t care for is that the filter cartridge needs to be replaced every 3 months instead of the 6 months that the Aqua Pour required.

I have a friend with fibromyalgia and she says that she doesn’t have any symptoms as long as she sleeps on her magnetic mattress pad. In fact, whenever she travels she takes her magnetic sleep system her.

I was curious if there had been any clinical studies done to show statistical benefits for fibromyalgia sufferers from a magnetic mattress pad. I found this one – Magnetic mattress pad use in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomized double-blind pilot study. It showed that sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad provided “statistically significant and clinically relevant pain relief and sleep improvement” for fibromyalgia sufferers. Apart from the results themselves, I found it interesting that they used a magnetic mattress pad that provided only 200 to 600 Gauss at the skin surface to get these results.

It would be interesting to find out if the participants in the study benefited directly from the magnets themselves or if the improvement in their fibromyalgia symptoms was do more to the better quality sleep that the magnetic mattress pad offered. Either way, relief is relief.

It’s Fall and for most people in the US October is about apple cider and carving pumpkins. For us Nikken distributors it also means that it is time for Nikken’s annual convention and the new Nikken products that are introduced there every year. The convention was this past weekend.

Before I get into the new items though, there is something that goes with new items that I want to talk about. To make room for new items in the warehouse Nikken has to discontinue some older ones. This year there were three product lines that were discontinued. Two of them were a surprise to me.

The biggest surprise was that Nikken discontinued the complete line of Elastomag magnetic support wraps. These have been very popular items for a long time and I have had several customers who absolutely depend on them when a part of their body doesn’t feel 100%. It was announced back at the beginning of September that the Elastomag wraps would be discontinued on October 1.

I assumed that there would be something new announced at the convention to replace them. There wasn’t. The magnetic support wraps are being dropped completely, at least for now. Some of the wraps have already sold out. At the time that I am writing this, there are still several in stock, including the magnetic knee wrap and the magnetic elbow wrap. The second items to be discontinued are the Aqua Pour gravity water filter and the Aqua Pour Deluxe. When I heard this, also in early September, I was pretty sure there was something coming to replace it. Nikken invested a lot of time and money in the new filtration technology for the PiMag sport water bottle that came out in July and it was a safe bet that they weren’t going to just leave it there. More about that later.

The Aqua Pour is a very popular water filtration system and now that it has been discontinued, I’m sure there are many people who are worried that they won’t be able to get replacement parts. There shouldn’t be anything to worry about. From what I have seen, Nikken typically keeps replacement parts in stock for 5 or 6 years after the item has been discontinued.

The third items that have been discontinued are the metal link magnetic necklaces. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that they haven’t been selling well enough to keep carrying them. I think most people either want the less expensive PowerBands, or for women, the slightly more expensive and nicer looking women’s necklace. Regardless, I still like this simple magnetic necklace and they are all 15% off through the end of the month too.

Now for the new items. I will only list them quickly here then go into more detail in a new post.

Wikipedia’s article on Lactoferrin lists several benefits that we can receive from lactoferrin.

• Transfer iron into the cell
• Iron regulation in the blood
• Antibacterial properties
• Antiviral properties
• Antifungal properties

One benefit that the article doesn’t list that I see written about in other places is lactoferrin as a prebiotic.

Lactoferrin’s job in the body is to bind with free iron and carry it into the cell so that it can be used there. Its iron regulation and antibacterial properties, and possibly the prebiotic properties too, are a side-effect of that primary function. Since lactoferrin binds with free iron to transfer it, lactoferrin thereby controls the amount of free iron in the blood. I once met a person who had to have blood taken regularly because his body produced too much iron. Based on this I wonder if his problem may have actually been a lactoferrin deficiency.

Harmful bacteria have a huge appetite for iron, and that is where lactoferrin’s antibacterial properties come from. Once the harmful bacterial population is back under control, the beneficial bacteria that are much less needy for iron can take over. That is one thing that a prebiotic can do.

The Wikipedia article says that lactoferrin can be helpful against viruses like hepatitis, HIV, herpes, and rotaviruses. This apparently happens through a variety of mechanisms. Lactoferrin can bind to the receptors on the cell membrane thereby blocking the virus, bind to the virus itself, or even affect the proteins in the virus reducing its ability to replicate.

Proof from Clinical Studies

Here’s an abstract on PubMed that lays it all out for us what lactoferrin can do for our immune system.

Lactoferrin, a multifunctional iron binding glycoprotein, plays an important role in immune regulation and defence mechanisms against bacteria, fungi and viruses. Lactoferrin’s iron withholding ability is related to inhibition of microbial growth as well as to modulation of motility, aggregation and biofilm formation of pathogenic bacteria. Independently of iron binding capability, lactoferrin interacts with microbial, viral and cell surfaces thus inhibiting microbial and viral adhesion and entry into host cells. Lactoferrin can be considered not only a primary defense factor against mucosal infections, but also a polyvalent regulator which interacts in viral infectious processes. Its antiviral activity, demonstrated against both enveloped and naked viruses, lies in the early phase of infection, thus preventing entry of virus in the host cell. This activity is exerted by binding to heparan sulphate glycosaminoglycan cell receptors, or viral particles or both. Despite the antiviral effect of lactoferrin, widely demonstrated in vitro studies, few clinical trials have been carried out and the related mechanism of action is still under debate. The nuclear localization of lactoferrin in different epithelial human cells suggests that lactoferrin exerts its antiviral effect not only in the early phase of surface interaction virus-cell, but also intracellularly. The capability of lactoferrin to exert a potent antiviral activity, through its binding to host cells and/or viral particles, and its nuclear localization strengthens the idea thatlactoferrin is an important brick in the mucosal wall, effective against viral attacks and it could be usefully applied as novel strategy for treatment of viral infections.

I found another abstract on PubMed from a study done to see the effects of Lactoferrin on the flu virus. At the time that I’m writing this we are approaching the flu season, so this one is rather appropriate. It says that the flu virus invades our cells, replicates itself, then kills the cell through apoptosis – it programs the cell to die. The study showed that lactoferrin inhibited the programmed cell death and blocked the virus from being able to replicate itself.

Here is another study on PubMed about the effect of Lactoferrin on candida. Many people suffer from an overgrowth of candida yeast in the body, so I thought this one would be appropriate too. Basically it says that candida requires iron to grow and “lactoferrin showed significant antifungal effect”.

If you don’t already take one, this is the lactoferrin supplement that I take.

I received a link to this article in my email today – Prostate Cancer Linked to High Triglyceride Levels at Renal & Urology News. They make it pretty clear:

Men aged 60 years or older who have elevated triglyceride levels are at increased risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer (PCa), according to Japanese investigators. They also are more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive PCa.

I had already done some research about Citrus Bergamia Risso, or Bergamot juice extract, and found that it can have a significant effect on triglyceride levels. A study on PubMed, the National Institutes for Health website, shows that Citrus Bergamia juice can affect triglyceride levels.

C. bergamia juice provoked a significant reduction in the plasma levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL, and an increase in HDL levels, versus hyperlipidemic controls (p < 0.05).

The study itself is about protecting the kidneys in people with high cholesterol. The important thing for us that we can take from the study is that C. bergamia can reduce triglycerides in the blood, which according to the Renal & Urology News article should reduce this risk factor for prostate cancer.

Nikken’s annual North American convention is coming up on October 15, less than a month from now. You may be thinking, “So what! Why should I care?” Well, let me tell you why you care.

1. The convention means that new products are coming.
2. With new products coming, something has to be discontinued to make room.
3. I’m giving you 15% off on the items that are about to be discontinued.

This year Nikken is discontinuing some pretty popular items, the Aqua Pour and Aqua Pour Deluxe water filtration systems, the Elastomag magnetic support wraps, and the magnetic chain necklaces. They will be officially discontinued on October 1, 2011 and available to order by phone while supplies last.

PiMag Aqua Pour and Aqua Pour Deluxe

The Aqua Pour is the extremely popular free-standing gravity water filter and the Aqua Pour Deluxe is the version of the Aqua Pour that sits on a water cooler base. It is Nikken’s lowest cost water filter and pays for itself versus bottled water in a very short time.

Why would you want to buy a water filtration system that has been discontinued? There are several reasons really. For one, I’m not sure what is coming to replace it. I think it is safe to say that there is something coming at the convention and, based on the water bottle that was introduced in July, it should be the best water filtration system that Nikken has ever launched. With that said, the price on the new item will probably be higher than the price on the Aqua Pour.

The biggest concern with buying an Aqua Pour now is how long Nikken will provide the replacement parts. I heard someone say that Nikken’s policy is to support discontinued items for 6 years. I haven’t seen that in writing but my experience is that everything that has been discontinued since I started has been supported for at least 5 years. Assuming that I am still here in another 5 years, I will let you know when I find out that they are discontinuing the replacement parts so that you can stock up.

And there is that 15% discount I mentioned.

Elastomag Magnetic Support Wraps

The Elastomag support wraps are also scheduled to go on October 1. In the three and a half years that I have been online more people have ordered Elastomag wraps from my website than any other item except for the Aqua Pour replacement parts.

The other magnetic wraps that I have seen available online specify a number of magnets that they have in their wrap, which means that they don’t have complete magnetic coverage. The Elastomag wraps are different. The material of the wrap itself is magnetic, so you can’t really specify a number of magnets and you have complete magnetic coverage. If you could count the magnets, it would be more than what the others offer. Add on to that the gentle warming effect of the far-infrared material that is also in these wraps and you have something really good.

Again, why order them if they are discontinued? The answer is because I have no idea what is coming. These wraps are very popular, so I would assume that there is something coming to take their place, but I don’t know what that might be. That and the fact that I don’t recall ever seeing the price of new items to be less than the price of the earlier item.

And don’t forget that 15% discount.

Magnetic Necklaces

Finally, there are the magnetic necklaces. These are simple magnetic link necklaces in gold and white gold. To be honest, I’m guessing that these are being discontinued because more people are buying the PowerBand necklaces instead. While these necklaces have more magnets, the PowerBands have far-infrared and negative ion technologies in addition to the magnets. That makes them much more effective at promoting relaxation.

The only reason to get one of these chain necklaces is if you want something a little more subtle and a lot more classy looking. There may be a replacement coming at the convention but I’m not betting on it.

I was asked a few days ago how to deal with sciatic pain. Before talking about how to deal with it, I think it is important to know what sciatic pain is and what can cause it.

The sciatic nerve comes out of the lower spine and as you can see in this picture, it passes through the pelvis beneath the piriformus muscle. Sciatic pain is caused when the sciatic nerve gets pinched, usually by inflammation or adhesions in the piriformus muscle.

The person who asked me about sciatic pain said her pain usually comes when he has been running hard, so her discomfort is probably caused by a tight piriformus muscle and can probably be handled with better stretching before and after her run. I found a great video of how to properly stretch out the piriformus on YouTube.

I believe that this stretch will also greatly benefit people who have chronic sciatic pain. If this is you, please keep in mind that your discomfort wasn’t created in just one day, so it will probably take more than five or ten minutes of stretching to get rid of it.

If I was having to deal with this sciatic pain on a continuing basis then I would have to find something else to help me get through. For me, that would be a weekly massage to work on the piriformus and some magnets to get me through the days in between. Probably the easiest form of magnet to use would be a magnetic chair pad for when you are sitting and a magnetic mattress pad for when you are laying down.

Have you ever had a magnetic massage before?

Let’s start with a regular massage, maybe a Swedish massage. It is very relaxing and maybe, if you allow yourself, you fall asleep on the table. They make for a great relief from stress and can help with blood and lymph flow. While those are great benefits, they are really short-lived for the most part.

To get real benefit from a massage you want to get a therapeutic massage, like neuro-muscular therapy (NMT) or a deep tissue massage. If you received a good massage then you feel like you have been worked over. You might even feel sore afterwards. As the client, you may not realize that your therapist feels pretty worked over too. If they aren’t careful, they risk injuring their thumbs or wrists every time they do one of these massages.

What if you could get the benefits of the deep tissue massage and feel like you had a nice relaxation massage? That is what a good magnetic massage can do for you.

What is a Magnetic Massage?

When you get a magnetic massage you will be laying on a magnetic pad that should be more comfortable then laying directly on the massage table. The blanket on top of you will also have magnets so that you are wrapped in a magnetic cocoon. The massage hasn’t started yet and you are already receiving benefits from the magnetic field surrounding you.

During the massage, the massage therapist will use a variety of magnetic massage tools. My favorite is a magnetic roller that rolls up and down the back bridging over the spine. The roller itself can target the erector muscles that run along the spine and are largely responsible for our posture. The magnets in the roller affect everything in the area including the erector muscles, the spinal cord, and the energy meridians that run along the spine.

The therapist can then use smaller rollers or magnetic balls to work individual muscle groups giving the traditional effects of massage from the balls in contact with the skin and working into the muscles along with the energetic effects of the magnets.

What are the Benefits of Magnetic Massage?

Hopefully you already understand the energetic benefits of using magnets on the body and how they affect energy flow and relaxation. What you may not know is that a spinning magnet creates a much bigger magnetic field that a stationary magnet. If you hold a magnet still and try to detect its magnetic field, you find find it up to an inch or so away from the magnet. When you take that same magnet and spin it about an axis, you will be able to detect it several inches away. In other words, that spinning magnet will send magnetic energy much deeper into, and even through, the body.

So the benefits of a magnetic massage for you as a client is that the massage therapist can affect muscles much deeper than they could otherwise reach. Now a deep tissue massage doesn’t have to hurt and you come out much more relaxed.

The massage therapist benefits too because they don’t have to risk injuring themselves to reach those deep muscles.

I started playing with the Emotion Code again a couple days ago and have been having success with it. The key was learning how to get one of the other forms of muscle testing to work for me.

I will record a video of how to do it if I can, so for now I will try to explain the muscle testing in words the best I can. Have your subject pick one hand and make a circle by placing the tip of their index finger to the tip of their thumb. They want to try to keep the ring whole while you test them. You ask a question then pull on their index finger to pull their ring open. If the ring stays whole, they test strong, then the answer is “yes”. If their ring pulls open, they test weak, then the answer is “no”.

I like this form of the muscle test because I can do it fast and I can do it on myself, so I can work on my own trapped emotions.

I started working on my heart wall yesterday. A heart wall is an energetic wall around your heart made of trapped emotions. The purpose is to protect your heart from other emotional wounding but can also keep your heart disengaged.

The cool thing about heart walls is that your subconscious assigns a particular material to them and gives them a thickness. For example, through muscle testing I found out that mine is made of steel and was 100 feet thick before I started working on it. So my subconscious says that there is a 100 foot thick wall of steel surrounding my heart. I released seven trapped emotions from it yesterday and reduced it down to 93 feet thick. I hope that it doesn’t remain at a ratio of 1 emotion to 1 foot of heart wall the whole way.

Some people have trouble accepting the idea of muscle testing. They think that, especially when doing it on yourself, that you are in control of the answers you get. Of course you can manipulate the results, but if you keep an open mind I believe that you get true answers. The proof for me is when I’m expecting a “yes” answer and I get a “no”, or I’m expecting a “no” and get a “yes”. Some of the emotions that I have released so far have been completely unexpected. I have no idea where trapped emotions of despair or heartache could have come from in my life.

The cool thing about the Emotion Code is that I don’t have to know where they came from or when they happened. I just use the process to identify the trapped emotion, roll my Magboy over the top of my head, and the muscle test again to make sure that it has been released. That’s it. Sometimes I feel something being lifted away when I roll the Magboy, other times I don’t. Either way, it doesn’t matter because the emotion is released.

I found this article about Glowing, Blinking Bacteria Reveal How Cells Synchronize Biological Clocks from ScienceDaily.com posted by a friend on Facebook. It is about some researchers who are using E. coli bacteria to study how a population of cells use the 24 hour cycle so light and dark to synchronize their biological clocks.

The article is interesting as they explain how they are using certain proteins to get the bacteria to glow and blink to create shorter light and dark cycles to research how the synchronization happens, and there are many potential benefits down the road from understanding how the individual cells in our human body synchronize with each other.

There are three statements in the article that we can benefit from right now.

1. “Biologists have long known that organisms from bacteria to humans use the 24 hour cycle of light and darkness to set their biological clocks.

2. “The cells in our bodies are entrained, or synchronized, by light and would drift out of phase if not for sunlight.”

3. “…scientists have discovered that problems with the biological clock can result in many common medical problems from diabetes to sleep disorders.”

I believe that the gist of this is that we need to make sure that we get regular exposure to sunlight.

I’m lucky that I get to work from home and my desk is set next to a window where I get full morning light. People who don’t get to be near a window can take a walk at lunch and after work in the evening. I remember when I was stuck inside an office I would take my lunch outside and find a nice space to sit and read while I ate.

While sunlight is the best solution, if you absolutely cannot get outside, or at least near a window, on a regular basis then a full-spectrum lamp will help. This is the full-spectrum desk lamp that my wife and I use.
