I have a friend with fibromyalgia and she says that she doesn’t have any symptoms as long as she sleeps on her magnetic mattress pad. In fact, whenever she travels she takes her magnetic sleep system her.

I was curious if there had been any clinical studies done to show statistical benefits for fibromyalgia sufferers from a magnetic mattress pad. I found this one – Magnetic mattress pad use in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomized double-blind pilot study. It showed that sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad provided “statistically significant and clinically relevant pain relief and sleep improvement” for fibromyalgia sufferers. Apart from the results themselves, I found it interesting that they used a magnetic mattress pad that provided only 200 to 600 Gauss at the skin surface to get these results.

It would be interesting to find out if the participants in the study benefited directly from the magnets themselves or if the improvement in their fibromyalgia symptoms was do more to the better quality sleep that the magnetic mattress pad offered. Either way, relief is relief.

I stumbled upon this clinical study a while back that shows how a magnetic pillow, magnetic bracelet, and magnetic insoles can help improve quality of sleep for people who suffer from insomnia. To prove it was a legitimate study I searched for and found it on PubMed. You can see the abstract on PubMed here.

The study showed that by using a magnetic pillow, people who had trouble either getting to sleep in first place, or staying asleep for very long, could get benefit from using a magnetic pillow, and possibly even better results if they also used magnetic insoles and / or a magnetic bracelet.

It is important to note that this study was a preliminary with a small number of people and no placebo control. I am sure that any follow-up studies will address these criteria.

This study is also dated to some degree because it uses the previous versions of the Nikken pillow and TriPhase bracelet. I would be very curious to see how much better the results would be if they used the current Naturest pillow with its more powerful magnets. And if they could get these results with just a pillow, insoles, and bracelet, just think what kind of results they could get with the mattress pad, or better yet, the whole magnetic sleep system.

I admit that I didn’t have any sleep issues before I started my adventure with Nikken. With my sleep system (which is a magnetic mattress pad, comforter, and pillow) I am almost asleep before my head touches the pillow. Even on nights when I have difficulty getting to sleep it is only a few minutes.

I watched a video recording of a Nikken meeting that was help somewhere up in Washington this weekend. During the meeting Dave Balzer explain some things about some of Nikken’s products and technologies.

How Does Bergisterol Taste?

Dave Balzer says that Bergisterol tastes like grapefuit juice with a little more kick. My first bottles of Bergisterol arrived on Thursday last week, so I have had a chance now to try it myself. I don’t think I have ever tried grapefruit juice, so I asked my wife and she agrees with Dave’s assessment. From my perspective, it is a bit bitter and it definitely has a bite, but it isn’t really too bad. Dave said that if you don’t care for the taste then you can mix it with orange juice or any other cold drink. Just don’t mix it with anything hot because the heat will start to kill off the plant sterols that give the juice its benefits.

The New Nikken PiMag Sports Bottle

Distributors are very excited about the new PiMag water bottle becoming available. It has been delayed a lot from when we first heard about it, probably more than a year ago now. On July 1st it will finally be here. He said that it holds about 26 ounces of water, or about 3/4 of a liter. It is squeeze bottle made of LDPE plastic (its reclycling number is 4) and is BPA free. The plastic is also bio-green so that it is biodegradable if it ends up in a landfill.

Unlike in the old bottle, the filter cartridge in the new bottle is replaceable as is the spout. The bottle will come with 2 filter cartridges and 2 spouts and Dave said that they are each good for about 40 gallons of water, or about 200 refills. He said that the filter is specified to alter the pH of the water to between 8.5 and9.5 pH depending on the source water and the filter also reduces the water’s redox potential by about 200 mV giving the water the ability to act more like an antioxidant when you drink it.

The filtration also meets NSF 42 and NSF 53 standards.

Why Neodymium Magnets in the Sleep System?

I learned something interesting about why Nikken used neodymium magnets in the RAM (radial axis magnet) disks in the Naturest mattress toppers. To create the RAM disks they force 6 magnets into a confined space with their poles oriented in 6 different directions. Dave Balzer said that they they used something like iron magnets then in a fairly short period of time they would begin to accommodate each other and their poles would move until they all pointed in the same direction. By using neodymium magnets they prevent this. He said that in 100 years their poles will not have moved, so the effectiveness of the RAM technology in the Naturest pads will remain constant for the lifetime of the pad.

Why are the KenkoTherm Wraps So Effective?

I’ll be honest. I tend to not think much about the KenkoTherm wraps that Nikken offers. I have more respect for them now though. There are four things that you want to do for a muscle injury. You want to apply compression to help stabilize the area. The elastic nature of the wrap will do that quite nicely. The second thing is to increase blood flow to the area so that the body can get the resources to the area to repair the damage. The third factor is also handled by increased blood flow and that is to get the toxins and waste products out of the area. The far-infrared quality of the wraps helps to trigger vasodilation, which means that the heat helps the blood vessels open wider so that they allow more blood through.

The fourth factor is acceleration, that is to accelerate the body’s healing ability. Again, this is done through heat. The far-infrared material in the wraps absorbs body heat, sunlight, and any other energy and reflects it back out in the far-infrared range so that it can penetrate into the area and warm it. It’s kind of like turning on your Bunsen burner beneath your beaker in chemistry. Heat speeds up chemical reactions, and in this case those chemical reactions are the ones that heal the body.

So that’s everything I learned by watching Dave Balzer this morning. I hope you found it helpful.

I have been sleeping under a far-infrared blanket for five years now and I sleep great. Actually, my whole family has and the biggest benefit that we have noticed so far is that the far-infrared blankets help to regulate body temperature.

I cannot say that you will get all of those benefits from using a Nikken comforter because that would be making a medical claim and I am not a doctor, and Nikken’s infrared blankets are not medical devices. I decided to take a quick search and see what people are claiming about magnetic pillows. I found one site that says that magnetic pillows help promote natural melatonin within the body. According to Wikipedia, melatonin is “a pervasive and powerful antioxidant, with a particular role in the protection of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.” Melatonin also has an effect on our circadian rhythms, our natural sleep-wake cycle.

Most of the rest of the information I found has to do with getting rid of headaches and stress so that you can sleep well, the usual stuff that you read about therapeutic magnets.

I hadn’t heard the stuff before about melatonin and that magnetic pillows can help restore your natural sleep cycle if used regularly. I found an article on eHow about how to sleep on a magnetic pillow. At first I thought the idea of an article about how to sleep on a pillow seemed a little silly, but it actually has some good information on how to make sure that you get the best night’s sleep possible, in addition to using a magnetic pillow.

I cannot personally verify any of the claims that people make about magnetic pillows because I generally sleep very well, at least until my cat wakes me up in the morning, and I don’t get headaches very often. I do use a magnetic pillow though and maybe that’s why? I don’t know and I’m not willing to go without my pillow to test it. I even take it with me when I travel.

My pillow comes from Nikken, the people who have been making magnetic products for the body for more than 35 years. Nikken is heavily promoting the magnetic sleep systems this month to the distributors. Yesterday I received an email from them and this is what it said.

Losing weight appears to be the number one resolution each new year. Unfortunately, nearly 90 percent of these resolutions meet with either little or no success. Most people do not know that there may be a very simple reason why: They don’t sleep well.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published studies suggesting that a lack of sleep may increase hunger and affect the body’s metabolism, which may make it more difficult to maintain or lose weight. When you obtain restful sleep, your body can better regulate the chemicals that control hunger and appetite.
Disruption of circadian clocks has ramifications for metabolism, brain, and behavior.

Anytime you hear that “there are studies” it’s a good idea to find some that back up the claim. So I went to the PubMed website and did a quick search. Here are three studies of the many that I found.

The first one is titled Role of Sleep and Sleep Loss in Hormonal Release and Metabolism. You can click the link to read the abstract yourself. It says that chronic partial sleep loss may increase the risk of weight gain and obesity, decreased glucose tolerance, decreased insulin sensitivity, and increased hunger and appetite. I’m no doctor, but decreased glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity sounds like a description of diabetes to me.

Lack of sleep is a double whammy as far as weight gain. First sleep loss reduces your ability to process glucose completely, so it gets stored somewhere for later, which equals weight gain. You also get to have increased hunger and appetite, which we all know leads to weight gain.

The second study that interested me is Disruption of circadian clocks has ramifications for metabolism, brain, and behavior. The “circadian clock” is responsible for keeping our activity and sleep cycles matched up with the light and dark cycles and this study set out to find out how disrupting that normal cycle would affect some mice. As with the previous study, messing with their normal patters resulted in weight gain. It also showed “decreases in cognitive flexibility and changes in emotionality.” In other words, they couldn’t deal with problems and they got grumpy, sound familiar?

Finally there is Sleep disturbances and inflammatory bowel disease: a potential trigger for disease flare? This one sounds like Chron’s Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but as I said before, I’m not a doctor. It says that changes in the circadian rhythm have been linked to the development of colitis, which is inflammation of the colon (or the large intestine as it was called in grade school). This abstract is a call for more research in this area. For our purposes here, it shows another link between digestion and how well we sleep.

How to Get Better Sleep

The best night’s sleep I have ever had has been on my Nikken sleep system, and I have been sleeping on it for almost 5 years now. There are benefits to having just the magnetic mattress topper, just the magnetic/far-infrared comforter, or even just the magnetic pillow. When you put it all together though it becomes amazing. You’re enveloped in natural magnetic energy, natural far-infrared energy and even some negative ions. I was looking through the search phrases that people have used in the past month to get to my website and found this one: “are nikken magnetic mattress safe for toddlers”. I think that is a really good question because we want to keep our kids safe and give them the best quality sleep that we can.

The short answer is yes, they are safe to use for toddlers.

When we got involved in Nikken our daughter was 2 years old and our son was 6 months and starting to cut his first teeth. When our daughter was going through that she was sometimes up twice during the night and probably 3 nights a week. It was miserable. So we immediately got our son on a magnetic pad. It was actually the Nikken Magnetic Pet Pad which just happens to be the perfect size to fit in a crib. It think he woke up during the night twice the entire time he was cutting his teeth. We were sold on magnetic pads right there and that remains to this day my most telling story about the benefits of magnetic pads.

Now our kids are 7 years old and 5 years old and sleep every night on a complete magnetic sleep system, which consists of a magnetic mattress pad, magnetic and far-infrared comforter, and a magnetic pillow. They sleep great and wake up rested and usually in a good mood in the morning.

Why I Believe Nikken Magnetic Sleep Systems are Safe

For one, I have met some of the people behind the Nikken products and I know people who know them pretty well. These are people with families and children and only want the best for them, which is part of the reason that they are with Nikken. I have also heard Anthony Bove, the person who developed many of Nikken’s magnetic products, speak about the magnets and his beliefs about how strong the magnets should be based on time-tested electromagnetic science. Nikken’s magnets are not exactly the strongest magnets on the market.

Nikken’s older magnetic mattress pads had magnets that were about 800 gauss compared to other companies that make magnetic pads rated at up to 10,000 gauss. Anthony Bove determined that 800 gauss was the right amount of magnetic energy to support the body and not over-stimulate it. The newer Naturest pads and pillow use 3200 gauss magnets and decided that the increased magnetic strength was needed because they sit deeper into the pad. The magnetic strength at the surface of the pad is about 800 gauss, the same as for the older pads.

The thing to keep in mind about Nikken’s products is that they are not intended to cure diseases. They are intended to support the body so that it can function at its best. Basically, all of Nikken’s products and technologies are designed to take the natural energies that our ancestors experienced in our natural habitat, the great outdoors, and bring them inside where we spend too much of our time.

So again, yes, the Nikken magnetic mattress pads are safe for babies, toddler, kids, adults, and the elderly. My kids sleep on a magnetic sleep system and so do my wife and I. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m a big fan of the Nikken Sleep System. Sure, you can find a lot of people who will tell you about how it helped their back pain, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, or any of a number of other problems. I can’t really talk much about specific conditions and whether the magnetic sleep system will help with them or not because I’m not a doctor and it would be illegal for me to do so. What I can tell you about is how well I sleep on it.

I have had my sleep system for almost 5 years now and it has been amazing. My family is fortunate to not have any kind of sleep condition but we are normal people and did used to have trouble sleep some nights. And I do mean “used to” have problems, as in I don’t anymore. I can’t think of a single night in the past 5 years that I have had trouble getting to sleep or sleeping through the night, unless I was sick (which is also very rare thanks, I believe, to Nikken).

In my family we all sleep on a Nikken sleep system. We go to bed at night, sleep through the night, and wake up rested in the morning.
